Bacardi Makes Big Plunge Into Single Malts

By Richard Thomas

Bermuda-based Bacardi is best known for its famed rum, but the company is also an international drinks giant with substantial holdings in Scotland. In a move that some would see as overdue, Bacardi is now planting its stakes into the world whisk(e)y boom by launching a series of new single malt expressions in 2014 and 2015.

The new single malts will be drawn from Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie, Macduff and Brackla, starting with the more affordable and mid-range single malts and concluding with high-priced super premiums. All the new single malt expressions will carry an aging statement.

The move is meant to draw more attention to the Bacardi-owned blends Dewars and William Lawson by highlighting the malt whisky sources that go into making them. This new move follows the facelift given to Dewars in April. Although single malts often get the glory, blended Scotch whisky is where the industry’s real money is made, with roughly 9/10s of all Scotch sold coming from blended Scotches.
