Dublin’s Old Jameson To Get A Facelift

By Richard Thomas

The Old Jameson Distillery in Dublin’s Smithfield district is slated for an €11 million redevelopment project by their owners, Irish Distillers (part of Pernod Ricard).

For almost twenty years, the Old Jameson Distillery had served as not just the major, but also the sole whiskey-themed tourist attraction in Dublin. When the building was reopened in 1997, it was not as a working distillery. Irish Distiller’s production remained centered at New Midleton, in Cork County. Instead, Old Jameson was turned into what was essentially a museum.

Old Jameson proved a popular attraction, but in recent years it finally received some competition in the form of the Irish Whiskey Museum and Teeling Whiskey Company’s distillery.

As part of the renovations, Old Jameson will close at the end of August, and is projected to remain closed until March. August is the most popular month for people in Europe to take their holidays, and reopening in March would give Irish Distillers at least two months to sort out problems with their presentation before tourist season 2017.
