Scotland’s Distilleries Attract Record Tourism

By Richard Thomas

According to the new figure from the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), Scotland’s whisky distilleries attracted 1.6 million visitors in 2016, a new record. This represents a 7% increase over 2014.

These visitors are also spending proportionally more money, boosting Scottish tourism overall. Although 2015’s visitation statistic represents a 20% increase over that of 2010, the amount of money spent by those people increased by 100%, to some £50 million.

These visitors came predominately from within the UK itself, as well as from the U.S.A., France and Germany. Scotland and its distilleries are, of course, part of the UK’s domestic tourist market, while the other three countries are the 1st, 2nd and 5th largest markets for Scotch whisky respectively.
