Donald Trump Calls for Glenfiddich Boycott
By Richard Thomas
Real estate mogul, reality TV celebrity and birther blowhard Donald Trump has shifted his fire from Barrack Obama and the hapless contestants on The Apprentice to the work of a humble 60 year old Scotsman named Michael Forbes. “The Donald” has taken umbrage with Forbes’ documentary You’ve Been Trumped and the attention it has received, and declared his intention to organize a boycott of scotch distillery Glenfiddich in retaliation.
The story begins with Trump buying up hundreds of acres on the northeastern coast of Scotland, in the same place that served as the setting for the 1983 Burt Lancaster film Local Hero. Abetted by Scottish authorities, who were eager to overturn or ignore their own environmental regulations, Trump set out to turn the area into a golf hotel and residential development. As if that treatment weren’t fawning enough, a local university even gave Trump an honorary doctorate. You’ve Been Trumped documents the development, the problems it has caused, and the efforts to stop it, and all of it without narration. The images and people interviewed speak for themselves.
You’ve Been Trumped was good enough to earn Forbes the nod as Top Scot for 2012, an award sponsored by Glenfiddich and the newspaper The Scotsman, but awarded by The Scotsman’s readers. Despite those readers choosing Forbes over luminaries such as gold medal-winning Olympic cyclist Sir Chris Hoy and tennis star Andy Murray, and the award being published by the newspaper rather than Glenfiddich, it is Glenfiddich that has received the full measure of Trump’s wrath.
“Glenfiddich should be ashamed of themselves for granting this award to Forbes, just for the sake of publicity,” said Trump, who also made the ludicrous claim that Glenfiddich, the world’s biggest selling single malt, was jealous of a competing line of whiskey products available only at Trump’s hotels and resorts. Trump has called for a boycott of Glenfiddich, and although he has ordered a ban on the sale of Glenfiddich within his resort empire, it is unknown if there are any other takers on Trump’s move against Glenfiddich.
The Donald never was one to nurse a grudge in private.
What a douchebag. Seriously.
