Walsh Whiskey To Release Sherry Cask Single Malt
Following the official opening of their distillery at Royal Oak in Ireland’s County Carlow in June, spirits remain high at Walsh Whiskey Distillery with the release of their Writers Tears ‘Red Head’ Single Malt.
This triple-distilled single malt is matured only in Spanish sherry butts, which have previously been seasoned with the finest Oloroso sherry. It is the influence of these scarce butts that give this expression of Writers Tears its signature rich, ruby hue and hence the moniker “Red Head.” The expression is distilled without chill filtering as nature intended and at a distinctive 46% ABV.
Writers Tears Red Head is a limited edition expression with the full complement of 12,000 bottles being released mainly to select markets from early September. It complements the annual release of Writer’s Tears Cask Strength.
Announcing the first major innovation to the Writers Tears range since the first Cask Strength release in 2012, Walsh Whiskey Distillery co-founder and Chief Executive Bernard Walsh said “We are thrilled with the result of the marriage between our first ever Single Malt expression of Writers Tears and these precious Oloroso sherry butts. The natural interaction and careful aging between the pot-still spirit, styled in Writers Tears signature fashion in copper pots, as all Irish whiskey was in the golden era of the 1800s, and the Spanish wood contributes to the outstanding quality and distinctive flavors of this sublime single malt.”
