Method And Madness Single Malt Irish Whiskey Review
By Emma Briones
Rating: B+
From the new range of experimental whiskeys created by Irish Distillers comes Method and Madness Single Malt Irish Whiskey. This is the second expression of a new range that, according to Irish Distillers, pushes the boundaries of Irish whiskey by mixing the experience of Midleton’s whiskey masters with the fresh talent of its apprentices.
Method and Madness Single Malt Irish Whiskey is one of just a handful of single malts ever released by Irish Distillers. In this instance, the whiskey was distilled at the Bushmills Distillery before it was sold to Diageo. At that time, Dave Quinn, now Master Of Whiskey Science at Midleton, was the head distiller at Bushmills.
This new expression is a 14 year old Single Malt matured in ex-Bourbon barrel. To give the whiskey the Method and Madness twist, a parcel of it has been enhanced with a finish in French Limousin Oak Barrels. It has been bottled without chill-filtration and with natural color at 46% ABV.
The Whiskey
Method and Madness Single Malt Irish Whiskey is copper gold in the glass with long tears. On the nose, the whiskey is really floral and sweet, with notes of toasted malt. There are some vanilla notes, with a touch of cinnamon and nuts. Finally, a gentle scent of oak and hints of spices.
The liquid is sweet and medium-bodied. It starts with its sweet side, with notes of vanilla and cinnamon rolls. Followed by a soft spicier touch, there are some fruity apricot notes, balanced with a gentle touch of nuts.
Method and Madness Single Malt Irish Whiskey has a lengthy finish. It mixes toasted barley notes with hints of bakery pastries, leaving a soft spicy touch.
The Single Malt of the Method and Madness range is, as the others in its range, a wonderful Irish Whiskey. It is floral on the nose thanks to the French Limousin Oak enhancing, but the highlight of the dram is its sweeter side. Really balanced, it is a nice Irish Single Malt that you will surely enjoy.
The Price
Only available (officially) in Ireland, Great Britain and France, Method and Madness Single Malt is priced at €79.
