Diageo Submits Formal Plans For Port Ellen Revival

When Diageo first announced their plans to revive the near legendary, defunct distilleries of Port Ellen and Brora in 2017, both closed in 1983, it was met with cheers from among Scotch Whisky enthusiasts. It’s only now, however, that the plans for the Port Ellen revival have been submitted to the Argyll & Bute Council for building approval.

Among the details gleaned from the plans, Diageo plans to install two sets of pot stills at Port Ellen. One pair will duplicate the original Port Ellen design, while the second, smaller pair will be used to create alternative flavor profiles. Port Ellen dates back to the 1820s, although much of the original distillery was demolished and replaced with new structures in the 1960s. The original kiln building with its distinctive, pagoda roofs will be restored, along with the seafront warehouses.
