Langatun Old Bear Swiss Whisky Review
By Paer Johansson
Rating: B+
Old Bear is the name for Swiss distillery Langatun’s smoky expression. The Bear is triple distilled from roasted malted barley and matured in Chateauneuf-du-Pape casks for six years.
The Whisky
The color is clear mahogany and the nose has a very strong and pleasant aroma of Smoked ham. It is really like being in a smoke house full of ham maybe next to a barrel of ripe, red apples.
In the taste, the ham follows through together with a clear taste of fruity red wine and toffee. The finish is slightly dry and peppery but lingers very pleasantly leaving a coating of smoke and tobacco on the palette.
This is a great dram for smoke-lovers that has also received a very good score (96) in Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. Great together with the Old Deer as the contrast between the two whiskies is very interesting and provides material for hours of enjoyment and musing.
The Price
Expect to pay £50 for a 50cl bottle.
