The East London Single Malt Whisky, Set To Take The World By Storm
There are plenty of things that we associate with East London, from the vibrant markets to the iconic landmarks, but one thing we don’t associate with East London is manufacturing whisky. Normally when we think of whisky we think of Scotch Whisky that is made in far-flung distilleries on dark and wet moorlands – but all that is set to change as the capital adds its whisky contribution. And, it looks like a fantastic addition.
What’s it Called?
Unsurprisingly, it is called the East London Single Malt Whisky and is one of the three new additions to the East London Liquor Company’s 2019 line-up. Alongside the single malt whisky is a new rye whisky called the London Rye Whisky and a specially blended whisky called the EL x Sonoma Blended Whisky.
We take a closer look at each below!
East London Single Malt Whisky – 47% ABV
The East London Single Malt Whisky is a double distilled (pot-distilled) whisky that is then left to mature in Kentucky Bourbon casks as well as Bourbon and Sonoma Casks for a minimum of three years.
The resulting whisky is characterful to say the least with sweet and warm milk chocolate peanut butter aroma that is a bit deceiving. On taste, the sweetness dissipates, and the resulting flavor is more savory with a more neutral almond nut flavor with almost vegetal bitterness. This single malt whisky certainly packs in a big well-rounded whisky experience.
London Rye Whisky – 47% ABV
The London Rye Whisky is a different proposition altogether, and the process to create it is also largely different. To start with it is initially aged in a virgin oak cask which is done for a year before the whisky is moved to fully mature in the Bourbon and Sonoma casks used in the single malt process. These casks hold the whisky for a further two years before it is once again moved for a six-month stint in ex-peated casks. Finally, it is finished in Pedro Ximenez casks.
The London Rye Whisky is incredibly popular and follows the first Rye Whisky that the East London Liquor Company launched last year that sold out. Aromatic notes of dark chocolate and toffee are followed by taste notes of sweet ginger and light tar. In comparison, the London Rye Whisky makes a slightly smoother and sweeter drink to its Single Malt companion.
EL x Sonoma – 45.5%
Rounding out the three additions is the EL x Sonoma Whisky which is a blended whisky that has been crafted by the East London Liquor Company and Adam Spiegel (Owner of Sonoma Distilling Company). The whisky is an exciting blend of rye whiskies that had been matured in various cask types including both gin and ex-peated casks that is then further blended with the famous Spiegel blend of Sonoma Bourbons.
The resulting drink is a lovely toffee and cherry liquor smelling whisky that tastes of spiced fruit, peppercorn and oatmeal. It goes down a real treat!
