Yellowstone Bourbon has extended their brand with a new bourbon in their regular release line-up: Yellowstone Small Batch 107. With a six year age statement and cut and bottled without chill filtration, the other stats are right there in the title: it’s 107 proof and using the only vaguely defined small batch designation.
The Yellowstone brand was launched in 1872, taking its name from the newly founded national park. The brand was revived by Steven Beam and Limestone Branch Distillery in 2015, before Limestone Branch was acquired by Luxco and then Luxco itself was bought by MGP.
The Bourbon
My pour took on a dulled copper look in the glass, while the nose presented a benchmark candy corn and vanilla, accented by cookie spices and a hint of lemon zest. The sip suggested that lack of chill filtration, because the while the texture did not start as anything remarkable, it took on a lightly oily feel by the end, developing some heft as it coated my tongue. The flavor was again benchmark bourbon to start, with caramel and honey, plus a little maraschino cherry. The finish opened peppery and a touchy woody, but faded down to the point where the honey could reemerge.
Yellowstone Small Batch Bourbon offers a good sipping pour, one with a little sophistication that belies its years, because six years old really is only just mature in bourbon terms. Most mass market products sit in or overlap the four to six year range. So, it’s a worthy bourbon and a good buy for those who like their bourbon on the spicy side.
The Price
Expect to pay $45 a bottle for Yellowstone Small Batch.
