Diageo Gets Go-Ahead For Irish Distillery
Diageo’s plans to build a €25m distillery for its new Roe & Co. Irish Whiskey brand have been approved by Irish authorities. The distillery will be built at the St. James Gate in Dublin, Diageo’s base in Ireland and the home of Guinness’s Open Gate Brewery. The plans approval also include the construction of a visitors center at the former Guinness Power House on Thomas Street, one that will be split between craft brewing and Roe & Co.
Production is not projected to begin at St. James Gate until the middle of 2019.
Starting Roe & Co. represents Diageo’s return to Irish whiskey following its November 2014 trade of Bushmills to Jose Cuervo. For the interim two years between handing off Bushmills and starting Roe & Co., which is currently based on sourced whiskey, Diageo was out of the Irish whiskey market.
