Kerrygold Irish Cheddar With Whiskey Review
By Richard Thomas
Rating: B
When it comes to whiskey food products, one expects anything from a big company to have a minimum of actual alcohol in it, and that defeats the whole point. Take your typical whiskey-infused barbecue sauce, with less than 1% whiskey content in the sauce just ought not to have bothered.
With that in mind, I approached the Kerrygold Aged Cheddar With Whiskey ready for disappointment. Beyond being the kind of big company food product that so often disappoints, it doesn’t even say whose whiskey it uses, so on that end it’s generic. Braced for a letdown, I was pleasantly surprised.
This Kerrygold cheese is absolutely boozy, with the astringency of the (presumably) youngish whiskey used boosting the sharp, acidic flavor of the cheddar. The result is a tasty sour tinge that balances nicely against what would be an otherwise mild, creamy cheddar.
This Kerrygold is a nice cheese, available for $11 in the U.S. and €4 in my neck of the woods, and at the latter price point it’s a real bargain.
