And Now We Have Beaver-Flavored Whiskey…
With whiskey fast becoming more popular than it has ever been and a craft distilling contributing to a highly competitive environment, it’s getting harder to come up with true innovations. The search for the novel and flavorful has led one distillery in a radical direction: beaver-flavored whiskey.
Tamworth Distilling in New Hampshire has released a new whiskey, Eau De Musc, flavored using secretion from a beaver. The secretion, castoreum, has been used as a flavoring additive before and is already on the FDA’s list of items “generally considered safe.”
Tamworth claims the secretion “exhibits bright and fruit qualities (raspberry) and rich leathery notes along with creamy vanilla aroma.” Although it is the most eye-catching of the additives, other flavorings in Eau De Musc include raspberries, fir needles, birch bark, maple syrup and Canadian snakeroot.
