The Unabridged Volumes Series is a literary–themed blend that pays homage to Master Blender Heather Greene’s book ‘Whiskey Distilled’. Milam & Greene hosted a media release ZOOM tasting of Unabridged Volume 3 Straight Bourbon Whiskey, led by Greene. There were numerous bloggers and whiskey writers from around the country in attendance.

Greene described how difficult it has been to overcome certain assumptions about Texas whiskey. She even shared that certain distributors are not keen to speak with her because of misconceptions about Texas whiskey. It is unfortunate, as there are damn good Texas whiskey distillers making delicious whiskey and Milam & Greene is one of them. Our owner-editor even named Texas as America’s third whiskey state, after Kentucky and Tennessee, in his book American Whiskey.

Unabridged Volume 3 is technically a 3 ½ year old whiskey because an age statement must reflect the youngest whiskey in the bottle. However, there is much more to the story in this bottle. The whiskey also holds other older, matured bourbons. Greene’s composite combines Texas production with contracted Kentucky Bourbons and Tennessee Bourbon. There are 4 casks of 10-year-old Kentucky Bourbon, 13 casks of 9-year-old Kentucky Bourbon, 7 casks of 6-year-old Kentucky Bourbon, 5 casks of 4-year-old Texas Bourbon with rye malt, 5 casks of 4-year-old Tennessee Bourbon and 15 casks of 3 ½-year-old Kentucky Bourbon with rye malt.  Greene explained that their malted rye is specific to Milam & Greene’s recipe, and we should expect to see more of it in the future.

The Bourbon
The Unabridged Volume 3 Bourbon is 118 proof and comes in a weighty squat bottle wrapped in a custom Limited Edition box. The whiskey color is a golden dark bronze.

The nose is loaded with Caramel, chocolate, baked pears, blackberry mash, baking spices and oak wood zest. The front and mid palate sports a candied butterscotch sweetness with hints of Caramel, chocolate, baked fruits, cinnamon, and oak zest. The finish is medium long leaving a buttery mouthfeel with a burst of oak, cinnamon spice and lingering rich mocha dryness that is simply satisfying.

This is a damn good, cask-strength blended straight bourbon whiskey. It shows a serious depth of flavor complexity that offers you the option to end your day with an insightful pour.

Keep blending your whiskey your way Heather, and your tribe will continue to grow!
