The Samuel Maverick Distillery is named after Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803 – 1870), a lawyer and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He is therefore one of those founders of a First Family of Texas. Just a few steps away from the historic Alamo site, the distillery is located on the same site as the old Lockwood National Bank, in San Antonio, Texas. The private reserve is actually stored and aged in the old bank vaults below the building. The distillery says it aims to bring about the flavors of Texas within its whiskies, so it joins a crowded field with that ambition in America’s Third Whiskey State.
The Bourbon
Samuel Maverick Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a 4-year-old Bottle in Bond Bourbon part of the Samuel Maverick Private Reserve. The bourbon’s mash bill is a traditional rye recipe, drawing on grain sourced from the Lone Star State. These private reserves are produced in small batches and bottled at 100 proof/50% ABV.
Color: Dark Amber
On the nose are full notes of corn sweetness, caramel apple, graham cracker, and some light citrus-like orange peel. On the palate, you are instantly hit with corn. It then fades to a mellow oak, cinnamon, honey, and leather. The finish is medium in length, with further notes of corn, leather, oak, and lingering spices.
The Price
Samuel Maverick Texas Straight Bourbon Whisky can be found for $80.
