Templeton Rye Releases 6 Year Old Expression

By Richard Thomas

According to The Des Moines Register, a new, age statement version of Templeton Rye will be hitting store shelves this summer. This is intended as the first installment of a new annual series of limited editions from the Iowa bottler.

The Templeton Rye is a 6 year old whiskey, drawn from the same MGP 95% rye whiskey stock as the standard whiskey. It’s also bottled at a stronger level, 45.75% ABV (91.5 proof), instead of the usual 40% ABV (80 proof). The recommended retail price is $49.99 for a 750 ml bottle.

The company has indicated it will probably release another run of older Templeton Rye next year and for the next several years.

“I won’t talk specific numbers, but we probably have the biggest reserve of rye whiskey of any rye whiskey producer in the U.S,” said co-founder Keith Kerkhoff.

Templeton Rye was long the focus of complaints in whiskey internet circles for deceptive labeling and marketing practices, complaints that culminated in a viral article on whiskey sourcing practices published in The Daily Beast two years ago. Following that public outing, one that focused to a large extent on Templeton Rye, the company both ceased the practices so offensive to its critics and became the target of a number of lawsuits.
