Nelson’s Green Brier Releasing A New Finish In Bourbon Line

By Richard Thomas

While they mature their in-house whiskey, Tennessee distillery Nelson’s Green Brier has been relying on sourced whiskey for its Belle Meade Bourbon, named for the famous estate on the outskirts of Nashville. The Belle Meade Line was expanded with Sherry and Cognac cask finished bourbons, and now they have added a Madeira cask finish to the line up.

Specifically, Nelson’s Green Brier is using Malmsey casks, notorious as the exact kind of cask that George, Duke of Clarence was reputedly drowned in in 1478, a murder immortalized in Shakespeare. Malmsey is a white grape varietal, nowadays used almost exclusively to make a sweet form of Maderia.

Nelson’s Green Brier has blended six and nine year old stock of its Belle Meade Bourbon, and set this to rest in the Maderia casks. After finishing, it was bottled without chill filtration at 90.4 proof.

Belle Meade Madeira Cask Finish will retail for $74.95, and will be available initially in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Tennessee, Nevada, Texas, , and Washington, D.C.
