The Dalmore has been a respected distillery in the Highlands of Scotland since 1839, when it was founded by Alexander Matheson. The distillery is located just outside Inverness Scotland, along the shores of the Cromarty Firth, and in 1867 was sold by Sir Kenneth Matheson to the Mackenzie family. The 12-point stag embedded on every bottle is part of the Mackenzie coat of arms.

The story of the stag dates back to the 1200’s when a member of Clan Mackenzie saved King Alexander III from a stag attack. As a reward for saving him, King Alexander III granted Clan Mackenzie the right to use 12-pointed stag emblem on their coat of arms. The emblem has been passed down through generations as a family symbol. Jumping to the 1960s, the Mackenzies sold the distillery to Whyte & Mackay who are currently responsible for the distillery.

The Dalmore 12 is another delightful addition to The Dalmore name and is a younger brother to the The Dalmore 15. The Dalmore 12 is aged for the first nine years in American white oak ex-bourbon casks after which half of the spirit is aged for an additional three years in rare and aged oloroso sherry casks. It is bottled at 40% AB.

  1. Dear Whiskey Reviewer, this was an excellent review of the Dalmore 12 scotch, although I’m not sure that i would agree with the grade you gave the whiskey, as I would have rated it an A- or at least a B+. But the primary question I have is in reference to your Price category stating that the whiskey can be found in American stores for $35 – $50 dollars. I’m not sure where your shopping as I’ve never found it for less than $64.99, and would love to find it for $35. Please share your locations. Thanks
