Aged twice in charred, new oak barrels, Cask and Crew’s double-baked straight rye whiskey is light, but full of flavor. If you are a fan of Canadian whisky, this is one to try. Bottled in Rochester, New York by Roc House Brands, it’s 100% Canadian Rye. It was a little confusing at first whether or not I really wanted to call this Canadian or American whiskey, since not all Canadian imports are labeled accordingly and it is almost half American. It almost seems like this whiskey could belong to both countries. At the end of the day, it’s a solid bottle to own if you are into lighter whiskeys.

As it stands, I’m not a die hard for Canadian whiskey. Cask and Crew’s straight rye had something to offer, however, and though I probably wasn’t converted to its biggest fan, I did enjoy it to a degree. Not my cup of whiskey but the double oaked was not without its strengths; the flavorful rye being one.

The Whiskey
The coloring is a nice medium amber in the bottle and slightly lighter in the glass. Immediately, you’ll notice cherry and hints of oak in the nose. The mouth is light and sharp with with strong notes of spice such as cinnamon. I found there to be botanical notes as well; a heavy herbal flavor along with the spice flavor. The typical whiskey burn accompanies all these flavors, leaving the finish soft and smooth with stronger traces of oak.

Overall, not a bad whiskey for anyone looking to start an exploration of Canadian bottles. Other bottles from Cask and crew are full of experimental flavor but if you are old fashion and just want a good straight rye, double barreled then this is your whiskey.

The Price
Cask & Crew Blended Rye should cost you between $45 and $50.
