Blood Oath is a bourbon out of Lux Row, one that claims not to be tied down to a specific family or distillery, giving them the freedom to blend as they see fit. Master Distiller John E. Rempe has been creator of Blood Oath from its beginning, and has been in the business of distilling for over 20 years. His experiences show in the whiskey.

After getting a biology degree from Saint Louis University, he allotted some time into making soft drinks as well as fruit drinks, of all things, before settling down with Luxco. As a free man with an objective mind, Rempe was able to create diverse and award-winning spirits including the Pacts that have caught the attention of many.

The Pacts are a collection of bourbons that have been released over the course of the last several years, each one a distinct creation not to be repeated. The series predates the opening of Lux Row Distillery, having started when all Luxco whiskeys were sourced, and Blood Oath has drawn on mature and middle aged bourbons, blended together and sometimes given a cask finish. Pact 6 is made from a 14 year, an 8 year, and a 7 year old bourbons that Rempe went on to finish in cognac casks.

The Bourbon
Blood Oath No. 6 fist hits the nose with hints of fruit and caramel. Some might catch a whiff of brandy though the sweetness of it is strong and a little overpowering. The color is a medium honey that looks great in a crystal glass. With 98.6 proof, it’s no surprise it has long legs, so enjoy.

At first taste, there is a crispness that inspires a feeling of summer with notes of fruit and caramel, vanilla and brandy for those who are really paying attention. The finish indulges the connoisseur with hints of spice, a light burn, and a bold bitterness. It’s here that the cognac barrel finish shines the most and where a bit of the burn comes into play.

The Price
Suggested retail prices are $99.99.
