One of the signatures of the Virginia Distillery Company is blending their in-house malt whiskey with imported Scottish Highland malt whisky. Another is their reliance upon Virginia sources for finishing casks. Thus, the distillery reached out to Potter’s Craft Cider and acquired some of their used casks for a first batch of Cider Cask whiskey, released in 2016. This hybrid whiskey is bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV).

The Whiskey
The look of this globalized malt is like that of white wine. It’s a viscous liquid, one that forms a thick crown and drops some heavy, ponderously slow-moving tears.

Virginia Cider Cask comes across with the scent of musty old wood on the top, and crisp, youthful and somewhat acidic apples and pears underneath, rounded out with a pinch of pie spice. The flavor starts with a light, fruity note, one that is swamped by rising, peppery spices. The short finish runs on with that peppery note.

The Price
Expect to pay between $60 and $65 for a bottle.
