Wiggly Bridge Distillery is one of a handful of small business run by David, Sr. and David, Jr. Woods in York, Maine. Endowed with a can-do, DIY and entrepreneurial style, the pair set out to make their own spirits, with David, Jr. going so far as to teach himself copper fabrication through watching YouTube videos and trial-and-error so as to build their tiny, 60-gallon still. The distillery is named for a local feature, which happens to be the smallest suspension footbridge in the world, a quaint feature nestled into a beautiful landscape.

Their bourbon is made from a mash bill of 57% corn, 38% rye and 5% malted barley, so it’s a high rye whiskey. It’s aged for the minimum four years in small barrels and bottled at 100 proof.

The Bourbon
In the glass, the whiskey has a light amber look. Coating the glass leaves a few thick legs behind.

My take on this bourbon is that it’s simple and straight-forward, but nice. The nose carries graham crackers, frosted with cinnamon, honey and vanilla drizzle. The flavor is classic bourbon territory, and not as spicy as the high rye recipe might suggest: brown sugar, vanilla, a little cinnamon and a tannic, oaky note. The finish runs off the latter, spicy, a bit woody and with a hint of char.

The Price
A bottle of Wiggly Bridge Bourbon should run you between $60 and $62.
