Laphroaig has usually been one of the more affordable scotch whiskies, seemingly available anywhere whisky is sold and offering up a reliable peat bomb in the bottle. As a result, it’s been one of the primary “go to” whiskies for many and for many years.

Many also look to the annual release of their Cairdeas, and this year its aged in first-fill bourbon casks and then given a second round of aging in Fino sherry casks and then bottled at 103.6 proof. The Fino sherry is different from other types of sherries in its dryness, paleness and cleanness, in contrast the more usual Oloroso casks, and this has a distinct impact on the scotch aged in those barrels.

The Scotch
The appearance in the glass is of nut-shaded gold with highlights of polished gold and polished copper.  The legs changed over time, with the first wave appearing and draining immediately, leaving an impression of thinness.  However, in time, a second wave formed without any jostling of the whisky. It was much more measured and leisurely in its performance, and appeared almost syrupy.

The nose was somewhat strong, and rose very agreeably to greet the consumer. Some tingling was apparent from the beginning, but wasn’t oppressive. The scent was smoky, as expected, but seemed somewhat tame compared to other Laphroaigs.  Added to this were notes of caramel and sea salt, oak, nuttiness and an underlying earthiness.

The mouthfeel was creamy and big, carrying lots of smoke, but it’s very manageable. Dark fruit and some burnt sugar, reminiscent of an elegant creme brûlée, lurk in the background.  The sea salt and caramel continue throughout.

The finish is long and continues the warming trend. It gradually migrates to the front of the mouth while maintaining its center at mid-mouth.  The sea salt and caramel and smoke continue, but are charged with some waves of pepper building some good heat before gradually fading.

The Price
Laphroaig Cairdeas Fino Cask can be found at a suggested retail of $80.00.
