Daviess County French Oak Finish Bourbon Review

By Emily Mullis

Rating: B-

Another spin on the revived Daviess County Bourbon is the French oak barrel finish, which for me was particularly interesting, as it was the most mellow compared to the Sauvignon cask finish and the Kentucky straight bourbon. Daviess County Distilling Company was one of the few distilling companies to come out strong after prohibition. They paved the way for many other distilling companies and with that in mind, Lux Row Distilling decided it would be a good idea to create a whiskey line that honors such an inspiring story.

The Bourbon
Out of the three, the Oak finished was the weakest. There was certainly spice in the nose as well as oak, caramel, vanilla, and hints of honey. An easy-going aroma that wasn’t in the least bit overpowering however the palate was less alluring than expected. That’s not to say it was bad by any means, just not as much oak as I was anticipating. The taste was soft and sweet with notes of vanilla and hints of chocolate. Thanks to the French oak finish, the overall palate was smooth with little to no burn. The finish was long with more hints of oak and more spice.

The color was a nice medium/light amber and was pretty in a crystal glass. It’s important to note that I tried these on ice to see what flavors would pop out. With the oak finish adding ice seemed to mellow it out even more so I would recommend drinking this whiskey straight if that’s your style.

The Price
The Daviess County French Oak Cask Bourbon can be found in retail stores for $49.95 and even as low as $39.99 in others. Forty dollars seems like a fair price for this whiskey.

  1. This is a fun daily drinker IMO that just has that strong oak flavor which I lovr. Obviously each palate is different but I prefer this over the other two offerings in this family. In this price range I think this is an excellent value for its flavor.
