BenRiach Releases Smoky, Three Decades-Old Single Malt

Benriach, the Speyside distillery founded in 1898, has a new release in Shades of Smoke (750 ml, 48.1% ABV). Created in partnership with celebrated digital artist Stefano Contiero, his evocative, moving artwork was inspired by the whisky and captured at different moments to create multiple, bespoke versions of the packaging. Reflecting the brand’s commitment to artistry, the expression is a rare, smoky vintage from 1994 paired with Contiero’s artwork which celebrates the elegant side of Benriach’s smoky profile after 31 years of maturation. Now available to purchase for $925.

Crafted by Master Blender Dr. Rachel Barrie, the stock behind the release came from casks of Benriach laid down in the spring and summer of 1994 — the very same year the distillery broke from Speyside convention and increased production of a sweeter style of smoky spirit. 

The original artwork, commissioned specifically for this release, in partnership with digital artist Stefan Contiero, is a moving interpretation of the swirling complexity and richness of the whiskey. Drawing inspiration from tasting, Contiero generated the artwork digitally, forming airy cloud colors which emerge like smoke. The artwork was then captured at different moments to create multiple versions of the packaging, adding bespoke collectability to each expression.

Artist Stefano Contiero said, “Tasting alongside Rachel was instrumental in unlocking a deeper understanding of the whiskey’s composition and the playful energy behind its creation. It gave me insight into the craftsmanship and layering of flavors, which I sought to reinterpret in my generative algorithm, allowing forms and colors to emerge organically, much like how the whiskey’s notes unfold over time.”
