Given what has been going on in Minneapolis lately, well, I would say to people do what you feel you need to do. But when you are done and you need to decompress, stop by Tattersall Distillery and try this high rye bonded bourbon.

Tattersall has two bourbon mash bills to its name, and both of them are out as bottled in bond whiskeys. The former is a wheated bourbon, while this one is billed as a high rye. I’m persnitckety about that term “high rye;” I think of a proper high-anything in an American mash bill as being 30% or greater. That is so much of the stuff that it actually makes a dent in the primary grain content. Tattersall answered my call by making this bourbon at 35% rye: well done.

The Bourbon
Tattersall High Rye Bonded has a bright amber look in the glass, the kind of thing that would be copper if only it were a little lighter. The nose is dense with molasses, maple, pumpernickel-style rye spices and vanilla. A sip goes farther into that same molasses and vanilla sweetness, with the spice side transitioning to allspice. The finish strolls off with a mildly spicy, fairly non-descript gait.

Of the two bourbons from Tattersall, this is clearly the superior. That might disappoint wheaterheads, but seriously, it’s time for being a wheated bourbon fanatic to become passe. Traditional rye mash bill bourbon is just as good or better, depending on who is making it. In this case, Tattersall’s high rye is an solid, stumping example of both the style and the growing market presence of bottled in bond craft whiskeys.

The Price
I have seen this item marked at right around $50 with online retailers.
