WhistlePig Offers A Peek At Boss Hog XIII For Festival

Today Vermont’s WhistlePig has announced the latest release in The Boss Hog annualized series. This thirteenth edition has been dubbed “The Golden Pharoah.”

Beginning today, The Boss Hog XIII is available for presale for the first time, allowing whiskey enthusiasts and collectors to reserve The Boss Hog Series’ newest crown jewel ahead of its nationwide launch on Sept. 29. In another first for the series, The Boss Hog XIII originates from the continent of Africa – specifically from a recipe for tiger nut cake found on an ancient tomb that is thousands of years old. When recreated on the WhistlePig Farm, it inspired a world’s-first finish in barrels seasoned with Egyptian black honey and tiger nuts, bringing a completely new, balanced flavor to The Boss Hog series.

The finish draws on two ingredients with a long history in Egyptian cuisine and culture. Egyptian black honey or Asal Eswed in Arabic, is the name for sugarcane molasses in Egypt, not bee honey. This dark, rich syrup remains a staple in the region today. Tiger nuts are not actually nuts, but edible tubers with a flavor similar to almonds or coconut and are found across Egypt, Africa and the Mediterranean. Dating back to Ancient Egypt, these ingredients have long been essential, used as food, medicine and ritual offerings.

“Through our research, we came across a tiger nut cake recipe carved into the side of a tomb dating back more than 3,000 years. We learned that tiger nuts and black honey were a true taste of the Egyptian land and its people, and that really resonated with us,” said Meghan Ireland, Head Blender at WhistlePig. “We recreated the recipe on our farm and fell in love with the flavor combination. That led us to experiment with the finishing for this year’s The Boss Hog to see what those flavors could do to Rye whiskey. We were not disappointed!”

The limited-edition The Boss Hog XIII: The Golden Pharaoh (SRP $599.99) comes in a 750ml bottle and is bottled between 102.6 – 105.6 Proof (51.3-52.8% ABV).
