Ballantine’s Scotch and Jameson Irish Whiskey have appeared in plenty of bars. In 2023, their names appeared on the sponsor list for the BLAST.tv Paris Major. Absolut Vodka was another partner at the 24-team Counter-Strike event.
For the whisky industry, the interesting part was where the brands chose to appear. Instead of another food festival or traditional sporting event, they entered a gaming broadcast watched internationally.
Counter-Strike Brought Whisky Into a Different Market
Paris hosted the CS Major in May 2023, with Team Vitality beating GamerLegion 2-0 in the final. Counter-Strike 2 arrived four months later.
A team’s map pool matters almost as much as its recent wins. At the Paris final, for example, Vitality took Overpass 16-6 and Nuke 16-13. The best CS2 betting sites are compared partly by which competitive markets they offer. A match winner and a correct map score, for instance, involve different predictions.
Ballantine’s and Jameson approached this audience through tournament sponsorship rather than betting products. Both were named among the event’s commercial partners, appearing in a programme that included broadcast content and fan activities.
Inside the BLAST Paris Major Partnership
The agreement extended beyond a logo on a screen. According to BLAST’s official partnership announcement, the brands planned several activities:
- Behind-the-scenes interviews with Counter-Strike personalities.
- Sponsorship of the tournament’s Overtime Show.
- Watch-party activations across multiple markets.
- International broadcast integrations and social giveaways.
The partnership connected Ballantine’s and Jameson with a specific esports event and its community. It also gave both brands material beyond conventional bottle advertising.
Ballantine’s Went Further With Gaming Collectibles
Paris was not Ballantine’s only gaming project. Later in 2023, the brand worked with Dota 2 on a limited-edition whisky release in China.
Dota 2 had turned ten that year. Characters from the Valve game appeared on special Ballantine’s packaging, and a promotional short film accompanied the release.
This was a different approach from sponsoring a broadcast. Fans could encounter the collaboration in the whisky aisle, where the game artwork made the limited edition immediately recognizable.
Whisky Brands Have Found a Place in Gaming
The Paris Major introduced both whisky names to a different setting. The Paris sponsorship placed their names alongside professional Counter-Strike teams and tournament coverage. Ballantine’s subsequent Dota 2 release used a completely different format, bringing game characters onto whisky packaging.
Gaming broadcasts carrying alcohol promotions must also comply with applicable age restrictions. At the Paris Major, the brands had access to tournament programming, interviews and watch parties. Ballantine’s later put Dota 2 characters on bottles sold in China. Those two projects illustrate how differently a whisky company can work with gaming audiences.
