Chattanooga Whiskey Company Introduces New Single Barrel Rye
Chattanooga Whiskey today announced the newest addition to their lineup: Rye Single Barrels, which are the uncut, unfiltered expression of the company’s malt-forward approach to rye.
Inspired by one of the distillery’s first experimental batches of whiskey, this version of their rare and flavorful style was made from the same four-grain, three-malt mash bill as their 99 Rye – which includes an abundance of slow-toasted and drum-roasted rye malt. This expression joins their two more established single barrel expressions – the Experimental Single Barrel Series and the Bourbon Single Barrel Series – which have become some of the most sought after single barrels in the industry, principally known for their uniquely innovative approach to the tradition.
“Each one of our Single Barrel Series is meant to explore a different side of the craft. The Experimental Single Barrel Series explores whiskey types, mash bills, and barrel types; the Bourbon Single Barrel Series highlights both mash bills and barrel types; and now, the Rye Single Barrel Series showcases our Tennessee Rye Malt mash bill, aged within different barrel types.” – Grant McCracken, Chief Product Officer
Made with a mash consisting of three types of malted rye – pale malted rye, caramel malted rye, and chocolate malted rye – accounting for over 60% of the mash bill. The rest of the mash bill is unstated, but in terms of style a mash like that makes it closer to the Maryland approach than, say, Pennsylvania or Kentucky. Like their signature “Barrel 91” expression, this aging process utilizes two unique barrel types, including a custom toast profile that was designed to complement the four-grain, three-malt mash bill.
“Since our 99 Rye is a blend of two barrel types, the goal of this series is to peel them apart and to highlight their dramatically different flavor and aroma qualities. While our classic #4 char barrel highlights the spicy-sweet spirit character of the spirit, our custom toasted and charred barrels meanwhile express a one-of-a-kind, toasty-rich barrel character. Ask me which one I like more today, and I’ll give you a different answer tomorrow.” – Grant McCracken, Chief Product Officer
Originally developed in 2015, Chattanooga Whiskey’s signature “99 Rye” recipe was first introduced as Experimental Batch 007: Tennessee Rye Malt.
