Colorado’s Leopold Bros. Begins Building New Malting Facility

Leopold Brothers, the Colorado-based distillery that is probably best known for its interest in recreating Maryland-style rye whiskey, started construction of a new malting facility last week. Having acquired a space behind their existing facility, they have begun building what will become a multi-story, 24,000 square-foot malting house. The result should increase the malting capacity of Leopold Brothers ten times over.

The move is a natural step for the distillery, since co-founder Todd Leopold began his career with a degree in Malting & Brewing from the Siebel Institute of Technology.

“This represents a big leap forward for the development of our malt and heritage grain programs at the distillery. We are thrilled for the opportunity to expand our work with Colorado family farms to produce malt that is world-class in quality, environmentally sustainable, and uniquely Colorado,” said co-founder Scott Leopold.

The new facility, dubbed The Malt House, is slated to open in October 2019. Local contractors Murray Stafford Inc. will be undertaking the construction, based off the designs of architect firm, Ware Malcomb, who is also based in Denver. Both companies previously worked with Leopold Bros. on their current distillery, which opened to the public in 2014.
